This place is great. Their barbecue is excellent. Oak wood smoked brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and the best prime rib in the Northwoods in my opinion. The prime rib is smoked, but you don't get an overwhelming smoke flavor, it is just excellent slow roasted prime rib. I have been searching for a great prime rib in the Northwoods and this is finally it. I have going here since they first opened in Minocqua. Now that they moved, they have a lot more tables. I have had barbecue many places including a quite a few places in the south and this is as good as the best down there. It is so good that when I had visitors in the middle of winter during a snowstorm, I drove the 70 minutes round trip to pick up ribs and brisket for my guests. There were travel warnings that night while I was making the trip, but I would not go anywhere else for ribs Shaun the pit master is very particular about his food. It will not leave the counter until it meets his standards. I can't recommend this place enough. Oh and he finally has unsweetened Iced Tea for us northerners who can't have the sugar.

This is the best smoked pulled pork ever. Sandwich comes with 2 sides - be sure to try the baked beans (best I have ever had) and potato salad. It's a friendly casual place. In nice weather you can sit outside by the water. Can't wait to visit area again, we'll eat there many more times.

The map is off -- the location is just off of 51, north of Woodruff on the west side of the highway. This is a casual spot that puts out very good BBQ. The brisket was a star - moist, flavorful, and the right amount of smoke. The ribs were solid, good flavor and smokiness. But I would like the see the membrane removed, and a St. Louis cut offered (without the upper rib tip portion). All of the sauces were well made and providing variety to the meal. Sides were very good as well. We especially liked the potato salad, and the greens. Good beer selection, but no wines available. The owner is very friendly/chatty and knows A LOT about BBQ equipment and techniques. If you want good food in a casual setting, or to take out, this is an excellent option.

Bad Bones BBQ makes my penis want to be a better penis... Does that about sum it up? No? I digress... Passion... The exemplification of barbecue; Sean is to meat what the pope is to the Catholics, and I'm pretty sure they both like the missionary position too. I am a connoisseur of BBQ- I follow it coast to coast, I dabble in it, I romanticize over it, and Sean's handiwork over at Bad Bones BBQ is BY FAR heads and tails over any BBQ I've had anywhere else... That's right, folks- in the desolation of Northern Wisconsin, no less! Makes a lot of sense why this guy is getting approached now by folks looking to start franchises- I believe one is opening soon in Southern WI! In summary, if you're looking to wrap your mouth around a hot piece of meat, look no further than Sean's pork sword of culinary justice. Fin.

Hard to believe some have reviewed this place as the best bbq. Beef brisket was some of the driest I have ever had. I am comparing to brisket I have had around Chicago area and understand it's slim pickings up here but I will continue to search for better quality.

The food here is amazing. Bad Bones is the best I've had by far. I've been going here since they opened and 2 years ago they expanded to this beautiful location over looking the lake. You walk in and are greeted by Bobbie (one of the owners) smiling face. She will tell you anything you want to know about the food and sells it perfectly. On our most recent visit I brought my boyfriend and our 5 year old daughter. She had the smoked chicken wings, he had the ribs, and I had the pulled pork sandwich. Everything was heavenly! The meat is tender and juicy with a perfect smoke ring that only comes from doing it right, slow smoking for hours and hours. The pork had little burnt end pieces mixed in that were a perfect mix with the tender meat. The ribs and the wings had a wonderful crust on the outside that the homemade memphis style barbecue sauce clung to. They also have 4 other homemade sauces to satisfy every need from mild sweet BBQ, to vinegar and mustard based, all the way to blow your lid spicy. This place rocks. Finally, on this trip we decided to save room for dessert. We always say we're going to get some but then stuff ourselves with meat and don't have room. This time we were on a mission. We boxed up half of our meals and ordered the bread pudding and apple cobbler. HOLY COW!! Sean and Bobbie don't just do meat. THE DESSERTS WERE UNBELIEVABLE! The bread pudding was just like grandma used to make, warm and gooey with a perfect homemade caramel sauce to top it off. The cobbler had a perfect buttery crust and wasn't too mushy like some can be. We were melting under the table after trying these desserts. We live 6 hours away and all of our trips north always include at least one (sometime 3 or 4) trip to BB BBQ.

Excellent BBQ. All is outstanding. By the pound or by the plate. Various sides with different than normal choices. Plan ahead they get busy.

Bad Bones was booked to cater my wedding and completely left me hanging only 6 weeks before the wedding to scramble and find someone to feed 200 people on short notice. I booked them a full year in advance and confirmed 6 months and 3 months prior to make sure we were good to go. When I called 2 months before to give them my final head count, Bobbi, who seems to be in charge, acted as though she'd never talked to me before and had no idea what I was talking about. She started by saying I could never afford the brisket, which I found pretty offensive, and then proceeded to tell me there was no way they could cater my wedding because she didn't even have anyone who could deliver, set up and serve it (something which was promised to me a full year prior). She cut me off on two different calls I made and promised to call me back, which she never did. I called a third, and frantic time, trying to figure out what I was going to do with such short notice, and again, she acted as though she'd never talked to me before, called me by the wrong name, and made me feel like it was my fault that she couldn't cater because I had too many people to feed and was asking too much (again, I informed her a year prior that we could potentially have up to 300 people and she said that was no problem.) She again threw out a comment about how I couldn't afford brisket, even though she never gave me an estimate of its price that I had asked for. I finally told her that I had tried to find other options and was basically screwed at this point because she had led me to believe she could handle it and now was changing her mind. The last word I had was me pleading to help me out and cater for us as promised. She said, once again, that she'd call me back, and once again, I never heard from her again. I ended up having to find someone to drive up from Wausau to help us out, and they were wonderful, thankfully. Talking with other locals, I heard Bad Bones had done this to at least 2 other brides, what a nightmare. I wish I had a read a review like this before counting on them, horrible business etiquette, not to mention, just plain inconsiderate.

My family and I have gone to Bad Bones since it first opened in Minocqua. We always came back because the pulled pork is good and the people were friendly. However, on our last visit, the owner made a point of chastising one of his employees as she was asking us how our dinner was. This was moments after he yelled at another employee. The tension in the air was palpable and it made us feel uncomfortable. There are many restaurants in the Northwoods that have good food AND friendly owners. That's where we will be going from now on.

Best BBQ in the north woods hands down. I'm counting down the days until this spot gets featured on a food network special. Definitely not your typical supper club, but this spot won as our favorite family dinner on our recent week long vacation in Boulder Junction. They outgrew their downtown Minocqua location and have moved to a more scenic spot just off of Little Muskie Lake. Their traditional dishes- ribs, brisket, pulled pork are to die for. But don't pass up the non-traditional- Lobster Mac and Cheese, or the Brisket Bomber- chopped brisket with giardiniera. Everything is smoked daily and the smell emenating from the shop will make your mouth water. Be sure to try every single BBQ sauce- the Pitmaster and the Golden are my favs. Great spot, owned by great people, with fantastic service. If only I didn't have to drive 6 hours north to get there!

Bad bones is an odd mix of cafeteria style and table service. Ordering is done at a station by the door, where drinks are also dispense, and cheques are paid in advance. Food is received in styrofoam containers and on plastic plates from the pass by customers themselves when the number on their receipt is called. Straight-forward, right. BUT, the staff will also occasionally touch tables and ensure guests are enjoying themselves, also taking the opportunity to see if guests would like anything further. That incongruity aside, the staff are all very pleasant, friendly, and helpful. The dining room is clean, well maintained, an wonderfully decorated with a blend of nostalgia and humour. There is also a deck for outside seating. The fare is well done. Not, perhaps, the best I've found, but very good. The beef brisket was a bit on the dry side. But the smoke ring was clearly evident, and the flavour was quite nice. The rub was not overpowering. The pulled pork is more moist, and the flavour just as good. Bad Bones offers 3 sauces, a basic ketchup and molasses type sauce ubiquitous in barbecue venues, as well as spiced up version with extra heat. The spicier version, called "XXX" has decent flavour, but the spice is simply not there. It barely creates a mild warmth on the lips and palate. They also offer a "Carolina" style sauce, a much looser, vinegar based option heavy on the black pepper. The sides are a mixed bag. The fries are of the battered/seasoned type, crispy and appropriately salty. The lobster mac and cheese was not so good. Excessively salty, the cheese sauce was to runny, leaving the mac and lobster bare and pooling in the bottom of the cup. The lobster itself was sadly over-cooked, being rubbery and rather bland. Bad Bones is definitely a destination in the Northwoods. Despite the odd service and few misses on food, the light-hearted atmosphere, welcoming aromas, and ample portions alone are enough to keep regulars coming back time and again.

Quick & very friendly service. We had our 1yr old son with us and the were extremely accommodating. The smoked pine rib was perhaps the best I've had. My wife had the brisket which was smoky, juicy and delicious. The smoked beans had a good portion of chopped pork too. Good enough for a meal itself.

We catered my Father in laws 80th birthday party from Bad Bones. It was a huge success. The beef brisket and pulled pork were outstanding. We catered for 75 people and 78 showed up. There was plenty of food. Bad Bones knows what they are doing!

Great way to put a spin onto the classic Thanksgiving Day dinner!!! Well worth the trip to get it!!! You will not be leaving hunger or upset with your choice to stop here.
